Animal rights organisation PETA has approached Indian-American singer Anoop Desai to endorse the cause of sterlising stray dogs.

The 'American Idol' contestant, who was nicknamed 'Noop Dogg' by the judges, was recently voted out of the singing reality show but People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) hope to cash in on the popularity of the singer in India.

PETA India has written a letter to Desai asking him to consider appearing in a video supporting it's Animal Birth Control (ABC) campaign "to help implement humane methods of controlling companion animal populations in slums."

"Anoop Desai is a big celebrity now with an Indian origin. The idea came when we realised that he is famously known as Noop Dogg," Madhuri Deshmukh, campaign coordinator said.

"People connect to Desai who himself is a dog lover. His celebrity status will help our cause spread to a wider reach. We want him to be the voice to garner support for stray dogs," Deshmukh said.

The letter has requested the 23-year-old college student to consider following previous American Idol contestants Vanessa Olivarez, Kellie Pickler and Ruben Studdard – as well as judge Simon Cowell – by using his celebrity status to help PETA help animals.
