Accusing the Congress-led UPA of making a "glaring foreign policy failure" in not prevailing over the Sri Lankan government to bring an end to the miseries of Tamils, BJP on Wednesday demanded resumption of peaceful methods to find an enduring solution to the ethnic problem.

"Yet another glaring policy failure of the UPA government is unfolding before our eyes in Sri Lanka. The leadership of the Congress party and the UPA government has reduced India's role to that of a passive spectator," LK Advani said in a statement here on Wednesday.

The saffron party pushed for safeguarding the unity of Sri Lanka as well as protecting the democratic rights of Sri Lankan Tamils.

"BJP reiterates its stand that the ethnic issue in Sri Lanka can be resolved only on the basis of two equally important principles -- safeguarding the unity of Sri Lanka and recognition of the inalienable democratic rights of Sri Lankan Tamils to live life of dignity and equality," Advani said.

BJP demands an immediate end t o war in Sri Lanka and resumption of peaceful methods of finding an enduring solution to the ethnic issue, he added.

Advani alleged that the UPA government has "failed to prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to end this grave humanitarian crisis".
