Police on Tuesday said there was no credible evidence yet against the teacher so as to arrest her in the alleged corporal punishment case in which the girl student, Shanno, died in a hospital here.

"Any credible evidence" is yet to be collected against Manju, the teacher of MCD school in Outer Delhi's Bawana accused of making Shanno stand in the sun with bricks on her shoulders which allegedly led to the girl slipping into coma and later to her death on April 17, a senior official said.

"We have not collected any credible evidence against her so that we can arrest her. We also have to record the statements of the victim's classmates," the official said.

A case of death due to negligence, which is a bailable offence, has been registered now and harsher sections of culpable homicide could be invoked after getting "more strong evidence", the official said.

The initial medical reports suggested that Shanno died due to respiratory problems and a delay in treatment could have aggravated the medical condition of the girl. The reports also suggested that she had a previous history of epilepsy.

The official said the girl received medical attention late as her family had allegedly taken her to a maulavi first and to a hospital later only.

"There could be a delay. We are investigating whether the girl was meted out corporal punishment as well as whether it aggravated her medical conditions leading to her death," the official said.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said it is yet to reach a conclusion in its probe into the death of the girl and the Vigilance Department looking into the matter has sought more time to complete the inquiry.

Dismissing reports that the MCD has given a clean chit to Manju, the teacher accused of inflicting corporal punishment on 11-year-old Shano Khan, MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said "the probe report is yet to come".

"The MCD is yet to give a clean chit to the teacher. The Vigilance Department, which is inquiring into the incident, was to submit its report on Monday but now has sought more time to complete the inquiry," he said.
