Police are collecting evidence against a teacher before arresting her in a case involving the death of a girl student who was allegedly meted out corporal punishment even as initial reports suggested that the minor died due to respiratory problems.

The initial medical reports suggested Shanno Khan, the 11-year-old victim, had a previous history of epilepsy and that there could have been a delay in her treatment.

A senior police official said they were "collecting" evidence against Manju, the teacher of MCD school in Outer Delhi's Bawana accused of making Shanno stand in the sun with bricks on her shoulders that led to the girl slipping into coma and later to her death on April 17.

"We are yet to arrest her. We are awaiting for the post mortem report. We are collecting other evidences also," the official said adding that a case of death due to negligence has already been registered in connection with the incident.

"We have to wait for the post mortem report to establish whether she died due to corporal punishment. Only after that we can charge the teacher under harsher sections like culpable homicide," the official said.

The official said the initial reports suggested that the girl's medical problems got aggravated due to the alleged corporal punishment.

The delay in treatment is believed to be due to the delay on the part of the family in taking the girl to the hospital, the official said adding that they were verifying this "claim".

There were no external injury marks on Shanno, said the official who also informed that the teacher is not absconding and they have questioned her during which she denied the allegation that she meted out corporal punishment to the victim.

Zaki Ahmed, a doctor who attended on the girl, said she told them that "two bricks were kept on her shoulders and then she was asked to stand in the sun for two hours, which she could not bear and started vomiting".
