Striking an emotional cord with the people of his Parliamentary constituency, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that Amethi was more like a family to him than a mere political arena where he goes to garner votes.

Addressing an election rally in Tiloi Assembly segment of his constituency Rahul said, "For me, Amethi is my family. I do not have only political relations with this place, it is rather family relationship that I have. This relationship dates back to the days of my grandmother Indira Gandhi and my father Rajiv Gandhi. My only endeavour is to continue the efforts of its development."

Urging the voters to give their mandate in favour of the Congress, Rahul said, "prime minister Manmohan Singh is doing his job successfully and deserves your support. I am seeking your love and affection," he said amidst applause.

Saying that he got no support from the Uttar Pradesh government, Rahul said, "At times I feel sad. When my father was the MP from here he used to work for you with both the hands, but with the current state government in UP, one of my hand is tied. The state government is trying to push back Amethi and Rae Bareli from the track of development."

Urging the electorate to cast their vote for the Congress, the young Congress leader said, "I want you to untie my second hand, by electing a Congress government in UP, so that I can work for you with more vigor and enthusiasm."

Narrating a incident that increased his affection for the place, Rahul said, "When I was 10-12 years old, I had come here with my father. It was a hot summer day and roads were quite bad. While my father was taking rounds in the village, I was also with him. All of a sudden I noticed a house, which was burnt, the grains and even the vessels were burnt. Then I noticed an elderly woman and she gave me a chocolate. This incident made me quite close to Amethi."

Reiterating his commitment to the development of his constituency, Rahul said, "As far as Amethi is concerned, I have fought for you and developed this place. And the love you have showered on me will only help me to keep the good work going on straight from the heart."

"At times I feel sad, as I have been able to come to Amethi for a day and I would like to thank my sister Priyanka who has been coming here frequently to nurse this constituency," said Rahul.

The Congress MP also said that in the last five years he has undertaken many works in Amethi, which included onstructing roads, providing electricity and also special focus on education.
