After his deposition before the court, Synergy Adlabs’s creative head Neeraj Grover’s father, Amarnath, said that even the thought of Mumbai gave him jitters.

Amarnath, a Kanpur resident, lost his son allegedly at the hands of actor Maria Susairaj and her navy officer boyfriend Emile Jerome on May 7 last year.

After reliving through the entire experience in court, Amarnath, 59, said, “Toot gaye hain hum. Mumbai ke naam se dar lagta hai ab. Zindagi main koi aim nahi raha. (We are heart-broken. I am scared of the thought of Mumbai. We have no aim in life now.”

On the first day of the trial, Maria appeared in a fancy white top, jeans and shoes, while Jerome was formally dressed in a white and blue shirt and pants. Jerome was wringing his hands, while Maria looked composed.

Amarnath told additional sessions judge CA Jadhav that Neeraj was a graduate from Kanpur University and went to Delhi to study mass communication. He then moved to Mumbai for work. He said that their son would speak to them over the phone at least twice a day.

“The last phone call made by him was at about 10:45 pm on May 6, 2008,” he said. When Neeraj didn’t answer his call for an entire day, his father left for Mumbai. He filed a missing complaint with the Malad police on May 8.

After about 10-12 days, the police called him to identify Neeraj’s “remains” including a chain and locket. “Main nahi pehchanoonga to kaise hoga. (If I won’t be able to recognise these (items), then who will?)” exclaimed Amarnath in court.

When shown the items in a plastic cover, he looked at his wife Neelam and shook his head. “Last year, I had visited Neeraj during Holi and had stayed in his room. I had seen these at that time,” said a visibly upset Amarnath.

During cross-examination, Amarnath said that he didn’t remember when he was given the “sad news” and that he was not in sound mental state then.

Amarnath also said that his wife Neelam had entered into a shell and was “living a solitary life”.
