It was D-Day for over 3.98 lakh aspirants who took the joint entrance examinations (JEE) for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) on Sunday.

It was the 24 “subjective-type” questions on “single-digit integer” in paper 2 that took many students by surprise. Though both papers (each paper is of mathematics, physics and chemistry) evoked a mixed bag of reactions from students, they did not call the overall paper tough, but said certain sections were “more challenging”.

B Sarma, JEE organising chairman at IIT-Guwahati, said the “exam was held peacefully and there were no untoward incidents”.

Of the two papers (both with mathematics, physics, chemistry), students like Yashodhara Murlidharan and Aniket Warang found paper two easier while Vignesh Rao, Aditya Prabhu and Samir Chatterjee said it tougher. “I found the papers lengthy and there were more negative marking sections this time,” said Yash Naik.

Experts said papers were conceptual and tested students’ analytical ability.  This year, multiple-choice questions also carried negative marks unlike last year.

“A major change was in section four of the second paper where students were asked to find the single-digit integer (0 to 9) as the correct answer and which had negative marking,” said Debadatta Das, academic head of Career Launcher, Thane.

“There were 8 questions each and 32 marks in all the three subjects. Such a pattern had last come in 2006 but didn’t carry negative marks, each subject had 3 questions, 18 marks in each and wasn’t restricted to single digits.”

These questions made paper 2 relatively tricky. “The 24 questions were totally unexpected, but the overall paper was student-friendly,” said Swati Das, who took the exam.

“There was a change in section 4 of both papers. I found the integer questions intelligent and enjoyable,” said Bhrigu Roy, another aspirant.

The total marks were 240 for paper 1 and paper 2, compared to last year’s 246 and 243 respectively. The number of questions in each paper were 60, compared to 69 and 66 respectively last year.

Coaching class TIME said the cut-off this time will be between 210 and 230, while Career Launcher said it will be around 165. Another said overall cut-off will be 160.
