Here’s proof that the ‘health’ of a company has a direct impact on the health of its employees.

In a survey conducted among corporate executives, a whopping 59% of the respondents said that they would quit their jobs if there was any further increase in their current stress levels due to work pressure.

The online survey was conducted last fortnight, in major cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore by HealthOn Foundation, a Mumbai-based NGO promoting good health through awareness on the web.

Over 600 corporate executives, in the age group of 30 to 45 years, participated in the survey, which indicated that a large number of executives had availed of medical leaves, in the last six months. In fact, many had availed more than their entitlement.

“The idea of the survey was to create awareness about health and wellness in the corporate sector. The survey’s findings should serve as a wake up call for corporates and they should initiate concrete measures to ensure that the executives stay healthy and productive,” said Dr Simanta Sharma, convener, HealthOn Foundation.

The survey shows that there has been a surge in work-related health complaints amongst working professionals across all metros in India. About 64% respondents said that stress at work took a toll on their productivity.

Whereas 76% agreed that their hectic work schedule was the main reason for neglecting their health.

Respondents also attributed recurring health problems such as digestive system disorders (acidity, heartburn, frequent stomach upsets), fatigue, lethargy, neck pain, backaches, anxiety and depression to stress at workplace.

“The only way to arrest this trend is to create awareness about work-related health issues and possible ways to address them adequately. This will help in preparing the executives to handle work-related health problems better,” said Sharma.

According to physician Dr Hemant Thacker, when it comes to corporate employees, the focus needs to be as much on preservation of health as on prevention of health problems.

“Given the variance of diet, stress at work, and daily activities, efforts to preserve health should be made by incorporating changes in the day-to-day lifestyle. This should be accompanied with regular checkups, and medical interventions, if any, to enhance productivity at work,” said Thacker.
