Moin Khan, former Pakistan cricket captain and the Indian Cricket League's (ICL) key man in that country, has admitted that the global economic meltdown has forced the cash-strapped league to consider offloading its players.

"Like everyone else, the ICL is also facing some financial issues," Khan told reporters in Lahore. "Now there is a suggestion to have just one tournament every year instead of several. That is why they are considering terminating existing contracts, but no final decision has been made as yet."

ICL-bound Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has already announced that the rebel league has terminated his contract and, after clearing his dues, would issue him a 'no-objection certificate' that would allow him to play for any another league or the national team once again.

But the former Pakistan wicket-keeper made it clear that the ICL is yet to decide on the matter. Khan, who played a pivotal role in recruiting cricketers from Pakistan for the ICL, said if any player decides to end his contract and play elsewhere, the league will not put any legal hurdles in his path.

"Dues of some players have been cleared and if they want to play elsewhere after ending their contracts they can do that," he said.

He said if the current players from Pakistan decide to end their association with the ICL, the league has the option of signing new recruits from the country.

Khan said the remaining players whom the ICL owes money would also be given their dues after the general election in India. He said a final decision on the future of the ICL programme would be taken after the polls.

Khan said categorically that in the past also the ICL had never stopped any cricketer from representing his national team. "If some of our players decide to leave the ICL and make themselves available for Pakistan, it then depends on whether the national selectors consider them," he said.
