BJP president Rajnath Singh claimed that the party's Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi is a victim of "political harasssment".
Noting that Varun Gandhi episode is "neither an embarrassment nor an opportunity" for BJP, party president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday claimed that the party Pilibhit candidate is a victim of "political harasssment".
"It (the issue) is neither an embarrassment nor an opportunity, but of political harassment, which the party is against," Singh said at nearby Nedumbassery when asked about the young BJP candidate.
29-year-old Gandhi is currently in jail and the UP government has invoked the stringent National Security Act against him in connection with alleged hate speeches during an election rally.
"If Varun Gandhi has violated the model code of conduct, action should be taken against him. (But) he has denied the allegations saying the CD was doctored. Until the inquiry is completed, he should not be harassed. We condemn it," the BJP chief said.
