Couples wanting to celebrate their marriage in guest house-cum-banquet halls in the city will have to wait till after the Lok Sabha polls with authorities booking all the 1200 such facilities to house security personnel deputed for poll duty.

This time the wedding season starts from April 17 and 27, 28 and 29 April are the most auspicious dates for marriage according to priests. However, the dates are  clashing with the polls in the seat on April 30.

Keeping in view the dates of LS polls, police has booked all the guest houses in the city from April 26 to May 2 so as to make appropriate arrangements for para military forces and other state police forces, Nodal police officer SP Ram Lal Varma said here.

During the LS polls, not only para military force but also district forces come to the city. Arrangements regarding their stay is the responsibility of police department, he said, adding that is the reason that all guest houses in the city have been booked from April 26 to May 2.

Owners of the guest houses who had taken the advance money have been hit hard.

During this period, around 1500 couples are expected to tie the nuptial knot in the city, Kanpur's Hotel and Guest House Association president Raj Kumar Bhagtani said.

"We have asked the parties, who have given the advance money, to take it back but they are not ready for the same. They say that all cards with name of the banquet hall have been printed, how can they cancel the place of marriage at the last moment, he said.

Earlier the forces were made to stay in school and college buildings but now as these places are made the polling centres the forces stay in guest houses, Varma said.

When asked where will the marriages take place as the guest houses have been booked, he said, "our priority is to conduct elections and not marriages."

A delegation of guest house owners recently met DIG Hari Ram Sharma but the police officer could not give any assurance, he added.

Bhagtani said soon another delegation will meet senior police officials on the concerned matter.
