Bhavna Panchal, the mother of Arpan who reportedly committed suicide in Odhav on Sunday, has alleged that her son didn’t commit suicide and was killed by his father, Shailesh Panchal.

Talking to DNA on Monday, Bhavna said, “My son was a timid boy, he could not have committed suicide. He would get scared whenever I had a quarrel with my husband.”

Moreover, she said, the little boy could not have reached the ceiling of the house which was around nine feet high to hang self.

Pursottam Panchal, maternal grandfather of the deceased, said, “When I and Shailesh entered the room, we found Arpan hanging from the ceiling. The rope was tied so tightly, we needed the help of neighbours to untie the rope. It raises the possibility of some elder person tying the rope.”

The residents of Babu Bhai Rabari ni Chawl, where the incident occurred, were also a little sceptical about the possibility of Arpan committing suicide. Seema Jaiswal, a neighbour of Panchals, said that on Saturday afternoon she had seen Shailesh fetching water from the municipal water tap. Later, at around 5pm, she heard some noise. She came out of her house and saw Shailesh along with his father-in-law, Pursottam, was trying to break open the doors of his house.

The neighbours said the couple used to fight over trivial issues. On the Holi eve, the couple had a massive fight. After the fight, Shailesh disappeared and returned home two days later.

Bhavna said when she asked where had he been, Shailesh replied he had gone to Pavagadh on pilgrimage.  The couple again fought and Shailesh beat up Bhavna, who left for her father’s house with Arpan in tow. Later, Shailesh brought back Arpan to his house. Bhavna alleged that when she met Arpan, he told her that his father had made him write something on a piece of paper.

Bhavna charged the police with not registering her statement and claimed that Shailesh’s brother, a senior government official, may have influenced the police. Inspector at Odhav police station J B Rana, however, said, “Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, as we have not found any strangulation marks on the boy’s neck.”
