In these days of crazy schedules and a race to be at par in this modern and globalised world, society's connection with its past seems to take a backseat at times. The glory of the past embedded with extraordinary thought and imperative values is missing from today's youth.

Hind Swaraj, a document written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1909, may sound alien to most of today's generation.

In an attempt to revive this glorious piece of literature on the occasion of its centenary, the Sahitya Akademi, ministry of culture, government of India, has organised a two-day seminar on March 14-15 on the premises of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.

Various eminent speakers presented their views on the document and its relevance in today's world, on Saturday. "Usually, works are prepared for contemporary society. But Hind Swaraj flows with time, retaining its essence forever. It is something that not only calls for intellectual discussion, but also for practical implementation," said Gandhian scholar Narayan Desai, president of the Sahitya Akademi.

Further relating the document with human development, Gandhian scholar Daxa Pattani said, "Hind Swaraj aims at development of the entire society and not a particular section of it."

The idea behind Hind Swaraj took origin in Gandhi's deep-rooted sensitivity and quest for improvement on a global front. He had himself translated the document from Gujarati to English. Ruskin Bond's essay 'Unto This Last' or 'Sarvodaya' - Gandhiji's interpretation of this essay, forms the base of Hind Swaraj.

Talking about a similar effort to attract youngsters towards Hind Swaraj, regional secretary of the academy, K Sreenivasarao, said, "We organised a national seminar on Hind Swaraj in Delhi in February 2008. This involved Gandhian scholars from all over the country, who presented their papers on this subject."

Other speakers including Bholabhai Patel, Kanti Shah, Hemant Dave, Rajendra Patel, Kumarpal Desai and Mansukh Salla among others presented their views on the subject.
