Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party has said the officials at the country's High Commission in Pakistan failed to assess the security situation in Lahore during the nation's cricket team's tour.

Seven Sri Lankan players and an assistant coach of the cricket team were injured in a gun-and-grenade attack on the bus carrying the team on Tuesday near the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore.

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella told a news conference on Thursday, that the High Commission had not maintained proper contact with the defence officials in Lahore, who had prior knowledge of a possible attack on the Sri Lankan team.

He said the Pakistani defence officials had discussed a possible threat to the Sri Lankan squad on January 23.

"How did the Sri Lanka High Commission in Pakistan fail to receive the intelligence report on the possible attack, if they were in touch with defence officials in Pakistan?" he asked.

Meanwhile, commenting on the attack, Sri Lankan minister for Mass Media and Information Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said the country's foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama went to Pakistan to look into the matter.

"Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari spoke to Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa and expressed his grief and apologies. The Pakistan High commissioner was once targeted by a suicide bomber here. But he survived.

The terrorism in South Asia has already gripped our hearts in fear. We do not have the answer to this problem. It has to be struck down," Yapa said.

Meanwhile, Kiriella also said that proper security had not been provided to the cricketers, though the Pakistani authorities had promised a high class security.

He said it has been alleged in some quarters that the security which was given to the Sri Lankan cricketers was less than what a minister in Pakistan would get.

The Opposition MP said the Sri Lankan cricketers had toured Pakistan when there was uncertainty after the dismissal of the Punjab Government in that country.

At the same time, he said, there was nothing wrong in Sri Lankan cricketers going there to show their gratitude to Pakistan, which had toured Sri Lanka, with India, during the World Cup 2006, when the West Indies and Australia had refused to come to Sri Lanka.
