An unsuspecting woman doctor fell prey to the online charms of an MBA professional. He proposed, she accepted... Then the love story went awry as the man tried to blackmail the woman with her semi-nude photographs.
The MBA, who called himself Raj — an associate vice president of an MNC in Pune, was nabbed by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of Mumbai Police on Tuesday. Charges of rape, cheating and molestation were slapped on him, and he was remanded in police custody till March 9.
According to the police, the victim, Reshma Patil (name changed), saw Raj’s (actual name Sameer Parija) profile on a leading matrimonial website in December 2007. They started chatting and exchanged photographs.
When talks of marriage came up, Raj told her he was working on a World Bank project in Tokyo and would marry her on his return to India. Soon thereafter, he requested for Patil’s semi nude and nude photographs. Head-over-heels in love, she sent him the snaps.
In April last year, Raj asked Patil to go to Pune and meet one his best friend, Sameer Parija. On April 18, Patil went to Pune.
Checking in at the Turf Club, she contacted Parija on the number Raj had given her. Parija came over and told her that Raj wanted him to take her to the best hotel in town.
So, they checked into a hotel and began chatting. Liquor was ordered. Consuming it Patil started feeling drowsy. As she was about to pass out, Parija removed her clothes and started clicking her nude pictures. He also tried to rape her, but Patil raised an alarm, forcing him to flee.
Later, when Patil contacted Raj, he started blackmailing her, saying that if she dared to report the incident to the cops, he would post her nude photos on websites. It was only last month, Patil registered a complaint with CCIC. She furnished Parija’s number and every detail she had about Raj.
Police found out that Parija was married for the past 10 years. His annual income was more than Rs17. 5 lakh. Cops felt that he blackmailed Patil to get his sexual needs fulfilled.
