Maoists blow up two rail stations in Orissa

After attacking the residence of  the Bharatiya Janata Party’s national vice-president and MP Jual Oram last week, Maoists in the wee hours of Saturday - at exactly 3.45 am - struck again blowing up two railway stations on Howrah-Mumbai and Rourkela-Barasuan section in Sundergarh district, about 450 km from here.

Two railway officials are feared abducted.South East Railway chief PRO Soumitra Mazumdar said, “The station master of Chandiposh SK Singh and his assistant Samir Mukherjee have gone missing since the  attack.”

Around 70 Maoists including women, attacked Bhalulata railway station, 25 km from the steel city of Rourkela. SP Santosh Bala who visited the spot along with security personnel  said “The Maoists triggered explosions using landmines and powerful explosives.” She added that intensive combing operations are in progress.

Under the impact of the explosives, the station building was badly damaged and the roof caved in, Mazumdar said. The signal and the communication equipment were destroyed. “An engineering team of railways and police officials rushed to Bhalulata  to examine the track and ascertain whether any landmine or explosive had been planted,” he said.  The station master, a gateman and a porter who initially fled the scene reported back for duty. 

Another group of Maoists attacked another railway station at Chandiposh, about 30 km from here on Rourkela-Barasuan section. Station master S K Singh and his assistant Samir Mukherjee have gone missing since the attack.

The railway authorities have beefed up security at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri railway stations and decided to install cameras.  The attack coincided with the beginning of a 24-hour bandh by Maoists in Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and West Bengal.
