With her great oratory skills, union woman and child development (WCD) minister Renuka Chowdhury is out to floor her rivals as she gears up to make women’s safety and gender bias an issue in the coming general elections. A special focus, of course, will be on the Mangalore pub attack against women.

On Saturday, after the conference with state WCD ministers and anganwandi workers, Chowdhury hurled sarcastic comments towards Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik. “Why is Muthalik so upset with the pink chaddi campaign? Didn’t he like the colour?” Chowdhury taunted even as audience burst into laughter.

The minister was reacting to Muthalik’s threat to file a defamation suit against her for instigating the “pink chaddi” campaigners. While Chowdhury denied having any links with the campaign saying “she neither manufactures nor supplies underwears”, she promptly added that she cared little for such defamation suits filed by self-centred persons like Muthalik.

“What about the girls who were beaten up in the pub? Isn’t their dignity of any value? It want to tell Muthalik that his honour is not above the honour of the daughters of this country. No one has a right to harass them,” Chowdhury said. However, she lauded LK Advani for his comment that there can be no compromise on the issue of attack on girls at the Mangalore pub. Advani had said that it was against Indian culture.

Chowdhury’s speech had many witty moments. For instance, on 33% reservation for women, she said: “When God made the world, he designated all important portfolios to women. He gave finance to Laxmi, defence to Durga and education to Saraswati. It is only the government which doesn’t understand this.”

On men making derogatory comments on women, Chowdhury said: “Hands that wear bangles also take responsibility. Tell a man who taunts you for wearing bangles that he is not even capable of wearing bangles.” On dowry she said: “You buy a man when you give dowry. And one doesn’t feel like respecting a man whom you have bought.”
