In a tragic end to a family's bid to evade social stigma, an unmarried teenaged girl died allegedly during their attempt to abort her pregnancy after which she was secretly buried in a pit at her village.

A case of culpable homicide and destruction of evidence has been filed against the girl's father and three others, police said on Monday.

Aneeta (18), from Jeesakhpur village in the district, was allegedly having a love affair and got pregnant. When her family members came to know about it, they tried to abort the child on their own, but the girl died in the process, police said.

The family members buried her body in a pit in the village, in Bagwala police circle area, they said.

Acting on a complaint filed by some villagers, police recovered the body from the pit and carried out a post-mortem examination.

A case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) has been registered with Bagwala police station against the father of Aneeta and three others.

However, the family members claimed that Aneeta committed suicide.
