Green is the mantra of the season, and the latest to join the bandwagon is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA). In a bid to spruce up their interiors and do their bit for the environment, the airport authorities have decided to landscape the airport with plants.

The contract for providing the materials and plants needed for the landscaping has been given to Green Carpets, a garden centre in Bangalore that provides all gardening solutions under one roof. Myna Batavia, who founded Green Carpets in 2002, is ecstatic at the opportunity of adding a third airport to her ever-growing list of clients. An avid gardener, her pilot project was the Hyderabad airport, followed by Delhi and now Mumbai. “We were appointed in December 2008. Chintan Shukla, DGM (Projects), CSIA, contacted us before awarding the project,” she said.

The landscaping is scheduled to be completed by the end of February and will be on display by March.

Green Carpets’ contract includes providing planters (pots), soil, pesticides, nutrients, fertilisers and landscaping of the airport. The first stage involves providing planters for the plants. Batavia added, “These Lechuza planters have self irrigation kits — reservoirs that provide water from a built-in reservoir, thereby eliminating the need to manually attend to the watering for as long as three months.”

The planters are made of polypropylene, are light, unbreakable and weather resistant, and their height ranges from 18 cms to 95 cms.

The other product ordered is fibre stone bowls. These are 70 cm wide and 70 cms tall. “These bowls allows multiple planting. Custom made and off-white, these bowls are circular in shape and enable layered planting,” Batavia explained. This planting system has no visible soil, has three layers of plants of varied height, with the tallest plant at the centre.

“These are the most practical planters and bowls for a location like an airport,” she added.
