A man hailing from Jharkhand allegedly attempted self immolation in the high security area near prime minister's office here.
 
32-year-old Abhishekh sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries after he set himself afire at around 3.30 PM at Vijay Chowk, police said, adding the reason for taking the extreme step was not clear.
 
Police had a harrowing time to control the blaze and he was admitted to RML Hospital in critical condition, they said.
       
"We received a call at 3.35 PM that a man tried to immolate himself at Vijay Chowk. A fire-tender was sent to the spot immediately," a fire brigade official said.
        
"The reasons are not yet clear why he attempted self immolation," a senior police official said.
 
Police sources, however, said that he wanted to meet some officials in South Block, but it was not clear which ministry or department he wanted to visit.
