Rasila Chudasama, 25, a farm labourer, from Satyamnagar Kamrej gave birth to conjoined twins at the new civil hospital in Surat, on Friday. According to doctors, the condition of the twins is stable, but their chance of survival is very slim.

With combined weight of four kilo, the children are believed to be joined from the torso. Even the doctors were surprised when they saw the twins with separate heads, different sets of eyes, hearts and hands but a set of legs, a stomach, a liver, intestine, and single genitals. It is believed to be the first incident of its kind in Surat and South Gujarat,

Chudasama, a mother of a three-year old daughter, was admitted to the new civil hospital, early on Friday after she experienced labour pain. She delivered the conjoined twins, following a caesarean section at around 4.30 am. She was told about the conjoined twins several hours after the delivery.

“The conjoined twins were a surprise for everybody. None of the doctors here had experienced such caesarean before,” said Nagendra Kumar, a resident doctor, one of the members of the operating team.

Large number of hospital employees and visitors rushed to the ward where the conjoined twins were kept to catch a glimpse of them.

“There have been instances where conjoined twins have been successfully separated after being operated upon. A surgery seems possible in this case too, but only expert doctors can decide that. However, their chance of survival is very low,” said Hitesh Patel, a resident doctor.

Conjoined twins are twins whose bodies are joined together at birth. This happens where the zygote of identical twins fails to completely separate. Conjoined twins occur in an estimated one in two lakh births, with approximately half being stillborn. Overall survival rate for conjoined twins is between 5 and 25%.
