Shock and anger has gripped militants operating in Kashmir after Pakistan booked top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and others in response to India’s dossier on the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

From the United Jihad Council (UJC), an umbrella group of 12 militant outfits based in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), to ailing Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the separatist leadership in Kashmir is crying hoarse.

“It is shocking that Pakistan has bowed so tamely under American pressure. Till yesterday Pakistan’s foreign office was saying that the Indian dossier was nothing but information and India has not given any solid proof. But it seems the visit of Richard Holbrooke has forced Pakistan to change its mind,” UJC spokesman Syed Sadaqat Hussain said in a statement to local news agencies.

Syed regretted that Pakistan did not follow due procedure of law and that “innocent” people were falsely implicated in the cases.

“We condemn the Pakistani government’s action for making innocent people scapegoats. It seems American conspiracy has succeeded. Law and justice demand that there should have been proof before lodging an FIR. These procedures were not followed and only allegation has been levied on innocent people”, he said.

What has, however, come as a big surprise is the statement of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who asked Kashmiri people not to rely on Pakistan for support and continue to struggle for solution of the vexed issue.

“Once you bow, so shall you always,” said Geelani. “Pakistan has done a U-turn under American pressure. They should have first gathered proof then taken action. But they have summarily proceeded against some people,” he said.

The 79-year-old ailing hawk asked Kashmiris to continue with their struggle without relying on the Pakistani leadership. “After 9/11 America is dictating terms to the Pakistani leadership. First it was Musharraf and now it is the current leadership which is coming under pressure from America.”
