Finally, plaques in the hallowed halls of Gujarat University were restored to their former places of glory, though allegedly, on tiptoe, by estate officials.

This happened owing to the cancellation of chief minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to the varsity on February 12 to formally inaugurate few new buildings of certain departments and schools of GU. Interestingly, the ribbon cutting was already executed much earlier by Trivedi himself. Nonetheless, its curtains to a week-long drama of fixing and removing plaques!

According to sources, the V-C had on January 28 ordered the estate officials to remove the plaques from the buildings including centre for defence studies and Study Abroad Programme.

“It is absolutely an act of cheating the chief minister and it could be a reason why Modi changed his plan to visit the varsity,” said PP Prajapati, dean of arts faculty, adding that the vice-chancellor should have resigned on moral grounds after the whole episode came out in the open.

Incidentally DNA was the first to bring the matter on CM’s visit and re-inauguration of buildings to light on January 29 under its report: “Trivedi out to please Modi”. The V-C’s move was allegedly inspired by his designs to please the chief minister so as to secure a second term as the V-C.

However, at that time Trivedi had said that these buildings were inaugurated at the time of assembly election which entails code of conduct. Later, the V-C had said that since these buildings were inaugurated in haste in view of University Grants Commission’s visit to allocate funds, he wished to re-inaugurate them in a grand manner. On the other hand, the V-C had called a meeting of self-financed colleges and urged them to donate for the state government’s Kanya Kelavani scheme, during Modi’s visit to the varsity. He has also pressurised the trustees of self-finance colleges to give Rs25,000 each to donate for the scheme. However, when asked, Trivedi refused to comment.
