The flow of investment proposals to Gujarat continues unabated even after the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit (VGGIS) - 2009, held in January, saw 8,558 MoUs being signed for an aggregate investment to the tune of about Rs12.07 lakh crore.

The state government has received 100 project proposals worth about Rs30,000 crore after the summit, bringing the total proposed investment to  around Rs12.37 lakh crore.

Highly-placed sources in the state government said, “Many business delegations attending the summit could not sign MoUs for a variety of reasons. Some delegations wanted to sign MOUs right during the summit, but due to lack of time for scrutiny of the projects we could not include them in the MOU signing list. Post-summit, we have received around 100 proposals so far, entailing an investment of Rs30,000 crore. These proposals are related to various sectors, including engineering, chemicals, food processing etc. We have forwarded these proposals to the respective departments.

Now, they will follow them up.’’ The sources further said, “The state government is planning to establish a proactive system for monitoring MoUs so as to fasten the work of turning them in actual projects. Under this new system, the respective department’s principal secretary will be made responsible for MOUs in their area.”

“There will be a three-tier committee also — one will be at the state level, second at the department level and third at the district level. The state-level committee will be headed by the chief secretary and various department heads will be its member.

The CS will review the MOUs’ status every month. The department committee will be headed by the department head and district committees will be headed by the collector concerned. Chief minister will review the status every three months.’’
