Trouble for IPS officer Saji Mohan who is already embroiled in the drug case and is in judicial custody in Mumbai seems to be compounding. The Chandigarh police will procure production warrants against him to question him about the official accounts that he allegedly tampered with.

Saji is expected to be brought to Chandigarh for interrogation. A case was registered here last week on a complaint by RC Bodh, investigating officer and “malkhana” in-charge of the NCB office here.

It said the inspection had revealed that about Rs13.81lakh, handed over to Saji Mohan on December 22 by Balwinder Kumar, superintendent in the NCB for depositing into the NCB account, was found missing.

Saji, in his interrogation by the ATS, Mumbai, has already confessed to having purchased a luxury car with the money.

The Chandigarh police said the investigations were almost complete and the police only required the handwriting sample of Saji Mohan to ascertain who had signed the documents to commit embezzlement.

Earlier, Chandigarh inspector-general of police SK Jain had  forwarded a communication to the ATS of the Maharashtra police, seeking a report on the interrogation of Saji Mohan to find out if any officer of the Chandigarh police was also involved with him in the sale of heroin.

Saji incidentally had launched a crackdown on the Chandigarh police to burst the nexus between heroin smugglers and policemen. This had led to suspension of six police personnel including a sub-inspector. It is believed that Saji had in fact become involved in “groupism” in the Chandigarh police as a result of which he targeted one group against the other.
