Educated youth in Ahmedabad seem to be taking to crime these days. After some young people robbed Mocha hookah bar ‘for fun’, a student from a prestigious city school shockingly called in hired goons, brandished a revolver and beat up another student over an affair with a girl.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the entrance of St Xavier’s High School, Loyola Hall. Arth Choksi reached the school along with some hired goons and assaulted Tony Pannikar as both were having an affair with the same girl. Choksi is a student of class XII and Pannikar is a class XI student of the school. Rajbir Sinh Bhati, the son of an IPS officer, is also said to be interested in the girl and was present at the time of the incident.

The police said Choksi and around eight to 10 men reached the school at around noon in a golden Chevrolet Optra. They called Pannikar, who was standing near the gate, to come out, saying they wanted to talk to him. As soon as he went out, they tore his shirt and slapped him. The men, armed with sticks and knives, hit him on his leg, which started bleeding. Bhati and Choksi also threatened Pannikar of dire consequences if he did not mend his ways. Fellow students and passers-by ran to
Pannikar’s rescue when he raised an alarm. In the meantime, Pannikar managed to enter the school campus, from where he called the police. However, before the police could reach the spot, the miscreants managed to escape.

Witnesses in the school said the youth also carried revolvers, and that the attackers were in the age group of 30 to 35 years.

The police rounded up a couple of suspects and took them to the station. The Gujarat University police said no complaint had been lodged in this connection and that both parties had arrived at a compromise.

Choksi’s father, Bipin, said his son along with his cousin Sarthak Choksi and a friend Maulik were standing outside the school when Pannikar came with around 20 men and beat up the three boys. “Arth and Sarthak sustained minor injuries while Maulik had to be hospitalised. We will file a police complaint against Tony Pannikar tomorrow,” he said. The school authorities are taking the issue seriously and are planning to take action against the boys involved in the fracas.
