Two policemen, who sparked a national outrage for brutally beating up a six-year-old Dalit girl, on Tuesday surrendered before a local court, which granted bail to one and sent another on 14-day judicial remand.

Inspector Chandra Bhan Singh and sub-inspector Shyamlal Yadav surrendered before the additional chief judicial magistrate (First) Jamshed Ali, who gave bail to Singh while sent Yadav on 14-day judicial custody.

The two, along with four other cops, were booked under various sections of IPC and SC/ST (atrocities prevention) act for beating up the girl, Komal, two days back for allegedly stealing Rs 280.

The accused tortured Komal after one Anju Katharia took her to Jaswantpur Police Station alleging that the child had stolen Rs 280 from her wallet at a market near Lohamandi in Jaswantpur area.

Senior sub-inspector Shyamlal Yadav pulled the girl up in the air by clutching her hair, threatened and scolded her and asked her to admit that she had stolen the money as six
other policemen, including SHO Chandrabhan Singh, remained mute spectators.

The state chief minister Mayawati had already terminated Yadav and suspended inspector Singh and deputy superintendent of Police, Zalim Singh.

An inquiry is also underway by state police chief Vikram Singh, who will be submitting his report in the next two days to the chief minister.

Meanwhile, DIG range Kanpur SN Sabat visited house of Komal in Nadia area and talked to the girl and her family members.
