Educational institutes in Ahmedabad seem to understand the importance of global student exchange programmes. India and its culture have a lot to offer; many people are intrigued by its rich culture, and the best way to spread understanding of it is through exchange programmes.

Schools and colleges are trying to follow this new method to educate their students about other cultures while sensitising foreign students on Indian culture. Caesar D’silva, principal, Anand Niketan school, said, “We stay in a global place today. So it is necessary to explore different cultures and traditions, which led us to being a part of this global village and joining the exchange programme.”

D’silva said, “Our student, Camille Hafner, is from Switzerland. The way she has stayed here, participating in all school functions and trying to learn Hindi and Gujarati, I am proud and happy that she came to our school. We have one of our students in Switzerland in her place right now, being a part of their culture. It seems to be
the best method of education for children.”

Gilles Soenen from Belgium, a first-year BA (economics and psychology) student on an exchange programme at St Xavier’s College, said he had not planned to come to Ahmedabad. “I just wanted to come to India to know more about her than what we read in the books. But I love every bit of coming to the city.”

The families providing the foreign students with a home stay share a good rapport with them. Students get to know the cultural differences with friends at school or college, like the seven foreign students who are here on an AFS Intercultural Programme,
India.

Susan Thomas, president, Ahmedabad chapter of the AFS Intercultural Programme, India, said, “We have a long list of foreign students who are keen to come to Ahmedabad to learn our culture, tradition and lifestyle. However, we need more schools and colleges to undertake this programme. Last year, 30 students had come to Ahmedabad under the exchange programme, and this year we are sure to get more than 45 foreign students.”

“A student exchange programme is the best way to understand someone’s lifestyle and culture and students can grasp it better in their learning stages.”
