“I have an injection of deadly virus that will kill everyone … I will hijack the aircraft.”

When Jitender Kumar Mohala, a charted accountant travelling on the Goa-Delhi Indigo Airlines flight on Sunday, screamed these lines, it scared everyone.

What made it all the more scary was the absence of a sky marshal aboard. A shell-shocked flight crew informed the pilot, who pressed the hijack button.

“Passengers came out safely and the commandos nabbed Mohala and handed him over to the police,” said an airport official. But should it have taken so long to act in a crisis situation?

The government has formed a three-member team to look into all aspects including the promptness of the crisis management team. There are clear rules on how to tackle a hijack. Three committees, aerodrome committee, central committee and civil aviation security committee, handle such crises. The bureau of civil aviation security (BCAS) and DGCA also play a crucial role.

“The committee orders commando action, establishes communication with hijackers for negotiating, opening doors of the aircraft,” said an official.

The DGCA, on Monday, held an urgent meeting to assess the cabin crew’s security preparadness. Representatives of the airline, BCAS and DIAL attended.
