Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) president Lalit Modi and secretary Subhash Joshi on Friday openly declared war against each other to seize control of the state cricket body.

Even as Modi issued orders stripping Joshi of all his rights and powers as RCA secretary in the morning, by late evening Joshi declared that the association’s election would be held on the due date, February 22.

Modi snatched Joshi’s powers under RCA constitution’s article 11(1)(9) to avoid the elections. It is widely believed that Modi fears defeat in the election after the recent change of government in the state.

Joshi, on the other hand, claimed he had the backing of 24 out of the 32 district cricket associations in the state. he also questioned the authority of the RCA president in removing him. “I am not a nominated office-bearer. I am an elected person like Modi. No one can remove me,” Joshi said.

During the previous Vasundhara Raje government, Joshi was considered a close ally of Modi. However, under the Ashok Gehlot government, Modi’s trusted lieutenant has turned into his frontline rival.

On Friday while the RCA president was busy in Delhi to seek Supreme Court’s direction on the elections, back home in Jaipur Joshi held a press conference to announce the date of the election. “We are going to hold the RCA executive committee’s elections on February 22,” Joshi declared before the media.

Reacting to the RCA president’s orders stripping him of his powers, Joshi said, “The RCA constitution under which Modi has acted was a tentative arrangement presented by him in February 2005,” Joshi said.

He added that the state cricket body would now be run according to the old constitution that was presented by Deva Ram Chaudhary, convenor of the ad hoc committee appointed by the then state government, in January 2005. “The Registrar of Co-operative Societies too has adopted the old RCA constitution,” claimed Joshi. The old constitution vests all powers in the executive committee comprising the 32 district cricket associations. “It’s the executive committee that has authorized the elections on February 22,” Joshi said.

Meanwhile, Modi is trying hard to sideline Joshi in the decision making process by transferring the secretary’s powers his close ally Bimal Soni, the RCA vice-president.
