A day after alleging that her husband’s relatives had kidnapped him, Fiza alias Anuradha Bali — second wife of Chand Mohammad alias Chander Mohan, former deputy chief minister of Haryana — attempted suicide on Thursday by consuming sleeping pills.

Fiza’s mother and neighbours rushed her to the government medical college hospital, where she is said to be out of danger.

On Wednesday, Fiza had alleged that her husband’s younger brother, Kuldip Bishnoi, had abducted him.

Chand was, however, spotted in an inebriated condition in Delhi on Wednesday evening. The police apprehended and then let him off.

The police are yet to record Fiza’s statement, but they say there are indications the marriage soured within a month of their coming together.

Chand Mohammad, who converted to Islam last month for his second marriage to Fiza, a former assistant advocate general in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, is the elder son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal.

After Fiza alleged on Wednesday that Chand was kidnapped by family members opposed to their marriage, Chand kept telling reporters he had gone somewhere on his own. “Nobody has kidnapped me. I am not a kid,” he told reporters.

The Chand-Fiza saga began last November when Chander Mohan disappeared as deputy chief minister. He remained untraced for more than a fortnight before making a public appearance as Chand Mohammad and married, to Fiza.

Chand is an MLA from Kalka Assembly constituency.

At a meeting last week, he had declared that his wife Fiza might contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
