Playing 'Joker' in The Dark Knight was "the most fun" Heath Ledger ever had working on a film, says his family.

Although the The Patriot actor died before the blockbuster hit was released, his sister Ashleigh Bell said playing the villainous role was fun for the late actor.

"In Heath's words, he had the time of his life," The BBC quoted Bell, as saying.

"We will take this opportunity today to honour his wonderful life and take comfort in knowing Heath will continue to touch future generations through this amazing artform," Bell added.

Heath's family said that they are pretty "proud and excited" about his posthumous Oscar nomination.

The Hollywood star has won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Batman's arch-enemy, and has also been included in a shortlist, which includes Josh Brolin, Robert Downey and past Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman.

If Ledger wins, it will be the second posthumous Academy Award to be handed out to an actor, after Peter Finch's honour for Network in 1977.

The actor died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs at his New York apartment last year on 22 January 08.
