The fifth all-India multilingual Brahmin mega convention that is scheduled at Bhugaon near Pune on Saturday and Sunday is seeking to forcefully convey a political message.

Worried about the marginalisation of their future generations due to reservations for other castes in jobs and education, Brahmin leaders want their community to become politically assertive to protect their interests. They also do not want to be taken for granted by any political party.

The organisers expect about four lakh delegates from all over the country to attend this annual convention. A political resolution will be moved during the convention appealing Brahmins to exercise their vote in the elections and elect those who would protect the interests of the community. This simple-sounding resolution has considerable significance given that the polls are slated later this year.

In a move that is indicative of  undercurrents in sections of the Brahmin community, the organisers have decided to felicitate Satish Mishra, the Brahmin face of the pre-eminently Dalit party, the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Mishra, who was instrumental in the transfer of a sizeable chunk of Brahmin votes to the BSP in UP, will be felicitated during the convention with the  Brahma Keerti award.

Mishra’s efforts had led to a shift in voting pattern of Brahmins from the BJP to the BSP and helped the BSP to win a majority on its own in the last UP assembly polls.

“Mishra discontinued his legal practice and joined politics for benefit of the community.
While taking efforts to transfer votes of Brahmins to the BSP, he ensured that Brahmins got 70 tickets from the party and 48 of them were successful in the elections,” president of the organising committee, Moreshwarbhatta Ghaisas said.

Ghaisas heads the Ved Bhavan here which imparts Vedic education to students. “Now, Brahmins should not remain bonded to a certain political thought and keep the interests of the community in mind while voting,” president of the organising committee, Ghaisas said. Senior Congress leaders such as Delhi chief minister Shiela Dixit and Goa chief minister Digambar Kamat have been invited as special guests at the convention.
