Police stations between Bandra and Andheri are looking in the rear-view mirror to tackle the increasing number of vehicle thefts in the western suburbs.

The special squad formed by Archana Tyagi, additional commissioner of police, west region, to check car thefts is busy making a list of past offenders to keep tabs on their activities. The squad is being helped by police stations in zones VIII (BKC to Sahar) and IX (Bandra to Amboli).

“This is one of the preventive steps we are taking to reduce motor vehicle thefts in the region,” Niket Kaushik, deputy commissioner of police, zone IX, who heads the squad, said on Thursday.

Police stations in the zone are collecting information about those against whom cases have been registered in the past five years. Police officials are then summoning the history-sheeters to the police stations to find out what they are doing now.

The squad has observed that in many instance, members of a family are involved in multiple car thefts. “If the father functions in Bandra, the son operates in Santa Cruz or some other part of the western suburbs,” a sub-inspector from the squad said. “We decided to make a list of all of them. Now, even if we meet one member of the family, we can extract information about what the others are doing,” he said.

“We have made a list of all those accused of motor vehicle thefts in the past five years, along with their addresses and contact numbers,” the officer said. The first list compiled by police stations in zone IX has 350 names so far, he said.

The police are collecting information about their current employment status and cross-checking it by visiting the addresses given by them of their employers. “We have instructed the employers also to keep an eye on them,” the sub-inspector said. The car thieves have been told to mark their presence in police stations every four days.

“We are trying to tell these offenders that the police are watching them. This can only happen by making them meet us often,” the officer said.

The squad is now making a list of past offenders in zone VIII; the list already has over 200 names. Once the list of zone VIII is concluded, the squad will shift focus to Zone X (Andheri to Aarey).

The initiative, the squad hopes, will help improve the low detection rate of motor vehicle theft cases. “Most offenders keep changing the area they operate in, to dodge the police. We are planning to cover all the areas in the western suburbs. This will help us detect more cases,” the officer said.
