The Gujarat government may have scored over Maharashtra in bagging the Nano project, but Maharashtra has been of great help to Gujarat by providing documents vital for the project.

The Ahmedabad collectorate procured documents from the Maharashtra State Archives last month that are important in establishing the land ownership of the Gujarat government.

The Gujarat government allotted land for the Nano project at Sanand near Ahmedabad, a decision which has been challenged by land owners saying the land was never acquired by the government. Through its affidavit in the high court, the Gujarat government claimed that the land was acquired nearly 100 years ago by the then British government from the forefathers of the petitioners.

The records, procured from the State Archives in Mumbai, clearly state that the agriculture department of the Gujarat government had passed a resolution to acquire lands from Khoda, Kalaana and Bol villages in Sanand in 1909. DNA accessed nearly 225 pages from four volumes of revenue department records between 1906 and 1910.

One of the documents clearly stated that the government made budgetary provision of Rs1,07,467 for the acquisition of land from the villages in 1909.

The petitioner, Jeetsingh Waghela and others have challenged the Gujrat government’s contention.

Volume 53 for the year 1907 with Archives department clearly states that Jeevabhai Waghela, Harisingh Waghela — the forefathers of the petitioners — and others had given 865 acres of land on lease of 15 years to the government.

Director of Archives, Bhaskar Dhatavkar said, “Some parts of Gujarat, Karnataka and even Sindh province (now in Pakistan) were part of Bombay Presidency, which was in existence till May 1, 1960. We have records since the year 1630 and are open to anybody.”
