Expect BMC to get stricter with smokers and tobacco users as it will be working overtime to implement the smoking ban. This is because the World Conference on Tobacco OR Health (WCTOH) is usually held in cities where tobacco usage is relatively under control, or preferably non-existent.

Also, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates pledging $500 million for the fight against tobacco in developing countries, the drive is only set to gain momentum.

The city is also set to get better equipped diagnostic facilities with the state-run JJ Hospital installing the latest Toshiba made 64-slice CT scan machine costing about Rs3-4 crore. It is also set to add an MRI machine to its armour in the coming year.

To strengthen the health services, the BMC will start a dedicated Mother and Child hospital in Borivili. Currently, the Mumbaikars depend on the Parel-based Wadia Hospital and other 27 maternity homes dedicated for healthcare services to women and children.

The next year might bring some good news for aspiring medical students with the state government officials trying hard to get a new state-run medical college for Mumbai. Union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss has also positively responded to the
proposal recently been mooted by the medical education department.

The perennial demand for blood at the crucial ‘golden hour’ could finally have an answer with the metropolitan blood bank inside the JJ Hospital becoming functional. The first-of-its kind blood centre promises to facilitate the availability of blood and its components for nominal charges round-the-clock. The USP of the bank will be its zero replacement policy and the patient’s relatives can just walk in and purchase it.

Besides, renovation of all the post-mortem centres under the state as well as upgrade of cold storage techniques are on the cards.
