Six new special courts to handle CBI's corruption cases

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which is faced with a backlog of almost 1,000 corruption cases due to shortage of judicial infrastructure has got a breather with the Delhi High Court approving creation of six additional special courts for exclusively hearing its cases in the city.

To date, there are about 986 corruption cases pending in courts. A total of 44 cases are 20 years old and 39 cases are pending for more than 15 years.

CBI officers who welcomed the move said long pendency of corruption cases will, thus, be curtailed with the appointment of additional judges. The new courts will be in a position to take up the cases on a day-to-day basis and give priority to old cases.

From now on, Patiala House will have one CBI special court along with one at Karkardooma courts and Tis Hazari will have four, Rohini courts complex will have three special courts.
