Temples security beefed up after threats

Security at Meenakshi, Sri Ranganathaswamy and Sri Ramanathaswamy temples was beefed up today in the wake of an e-mail threat to blow up the shrines.

MADURAI: Security at Meenakshi, Sri Ranganathaswamy and Sri Ramanathaswamy temples was beefed up today in the wake of an e-mail threat to blow up the shrines.

"We will blast Madurai, Srirangam and Rameswaram temples" said the email received by Madurai District Collector P.Seetharaman Saturday.

Security has been tightened in the three famous temples in view of the threat, Seetharaman told reporters here. 

The Meenakshi temple is located in Madurai, Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam in Tiruchirapalli district and Sri Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram.

The Commissioner of Police in Madurai Nandabalan said 40 commandos besides 2,500 policemen had been deployed in Madurai alone.
