Cops, Coast Guard believe that aides of the fugitive don backed the terrorists in the 26/11 attacks

The scent of D-Company is getting stronger and stronger. Piecing together shreds of evidence, the cops are now almost certain that fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s men in the city did provide logistical support to the 10 suspected Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorists in the 26/11 attacks.

Senior officials of the Coast Guard too are sure about Dawood’s role in the attacks. “Nobody knows the sea around Mumbai better than Dawood. His support is essential for anybody planning to attack the city via the sea route,” said a Coast Guard officer on condition of anonymity.

The police suspect that the gangsters in-charge of the fugitive don’s Mumbai operations, including those languishing in jails, knew in advance about the
unprecedented terror attacks. The cops have fanned out in the city, searching for Dawood aides. They are also interrogating the jailed D-Company men.

Sleuths from Mumbai crime branch visited Arthur Road jail on Wednesday to question gangsters like Mustafa Dossa and Salim Fruit, and former Dawood aide Abu Salem. On Thursday, the police went to Thane central prison where quite a few aides of Dawood’s arch-rival, Chhota Rajan, are lodged.

Thane jail sources said that the police, by questioning Rajan aides, such as Vicky Malhotra, Nilesh Paradkar, Vinod Bhaiiyaa and Dharmesh Shah, are trying to get crucial leads about the gangmen’s activities. “By questioning them, the police want to nail Dawood’s role in the terror attacks,” said a source. “Rajan’s men are being questioned as they would be more forthcoming about the anti-state activities of their rivals.”

The police would keep visiting the jail for the coming few weeks, he added.

Police first came to know about Dawood’s expertise in infiltrating the porous seafront while investigating the 1993 serial blasts case. At that time, arms had been brought in
through the sea and landed at Shekhadi, Ratnagiri.
