LAHORE: Fearing the birth of grave crisis in Indo-Pak relations in the wake of the Mumbai attacks and the alleged involvement of Pakistani jehadis, the US, UK and other world players have established hotline contacts with Islamabad and Delhi to avert any possible confrontation between the two nuclear armed South Asian neighbours.

According to well informed diplomatic sources in Islamabad, not only the global players are worried about a possible Indo-Pak row in the wake of the Mumbai carnage, but Pakistan’s ruling circles have also sensed the gravity of the situation and established close contact with India through formal and informal diplomatic channels.

While the Pakistani President telephoned Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to condemn the attacks, the Pakistani Prime Minister called Manmohan Singh on Friday to express solidarity with the people of India.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, currently visiting India, has already offered a hotline between intelligence chiefs of the two countries while condemning the terrorist acts in Mumbai in the strongest possible terms.

He has said Pakistan is ready to cooperate with India in launching a probe into the acts of terrorism in Mumbai, according to media reports from New Delhi.

A diplomat in Islamabad said while requesting anonymity that the leading world nations like US and UK had a fair idea of the possible Indo-Pak row after the Mumbai attacks as Indian Prime Minister’s address to the nation has proved that their concerns were not misplaced.

He said the world important capitals were trying to defuse the tension between Islamabad and New Delhi, as they believed that the Mumbai attacks were the handiwork of those elements that did not want the normalisation of Indo-Pak ties.

The US and its allies in war on terror believe the resurfacing of tension between Islamabad and Delhi after years of improved relations would badly impact the anti-terrorism global campaign. He was of the view that disruption of India-Pakistan ties at this juncture entails serious fallout in Afghanistan.
