WASHINGTON: Hillary Clinton, former first lady and once a potential Democratic nominee for the White House, is being considered for the coveted Secretary of State post by the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama, the media here reported on Friday.

Citing two unnamed Obama advisers, NBC News said that 61-year-old charismatic New York Senator -- also known for her work on international women's issues and human rights -- is under consideration to be Secretary of State.

The office of Clinton, who withdrew from the Democratic Presidential race in June this year after giving a neck-and-neck fight to Obama in primaries, says that any decision about the transition is up to the President-elect and his team, according to the report.

Clinton was seen taking a flight to Chicago where Obama is currently based, but an adviser was quoted by NBC as saying that it was on a personal business. It was not known whether she had any meeting or conversation with Obama while there.

Other Democrats reportedly in fray for the post are John Kerry, a Massachusetts Senator; and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who is a Hispanic, while a possible compromise choice could be former Senator Tom Daschle.

ABC News also quoted a 'knowledgeable source' as saying that the Obama Transition team is "very serious" about Clinton being under consideration for Secretary of State.

"She's smart, she's strong, she's experienced, she's a team player, she is usually pretty diplomatic, and she also brings some gender diversity to an Obama Team concerned about such matters. She brings instant stature to the job," an unnamed Democrat was quoted as saying.

During the primaries, Obama and Clinton clashed over international issues, including Pakistan. She had denounced his public assertions about attacking terrorists in Pakistan with or without Islamabad's permission.
