NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro has now authorised its station personnel to directly impose fines and realise penalties from offenders for various offences.

Earlier offenders were counselled or handed over to the police for producing before the Metropolitan Magistrate, empowered to impose fines and imprisonment.

Under the Delhi Metro Railway (Operation & Maintenance) Act, 2002, DMRC personnel at all the 62 stations will be now able to impose fines of upto Rs 500 and realise penalties for offences like squatting, littering, nuisance, travelling with undervalued tokens and obstructing officials on duty, within the Metro premises, including parking areas.

The authorised person will be the Station Manager and, in his absence, the Station Controller on duty. The new provisions will come into effect immediately, Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said on Sunday.

Challans will be handed over to offenders and those failing to deposit the money will be handed to the police for producing before the Metropolitan Magistrate.

Meanwhile, DMRC's "flying squads" have recorded over 16,000 cases of violations such as squatting, travelling with undervalued tokens, nuisance, littering, refusal to provide reserved seats to ladies, senior citizens and physically challenged, etc. while conducting surprise checks since July this year.
