SRINGAR: Militants were devising strategies to disrupt the elections in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said on Sunday, adding "we have seen more infiltration attempts from Poonch and Rajouri during the past one month".
Militant groups Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) have directed their commanders in border districts of Rajouri and Poonch to plan strikes during various poll phases, the official said.
Both these districts are traditional infiltration routes and have easy connectivity to Kashmir valley through accessible mountains passes.
With snow falling relatively late here, the militants have been asked to attempt infiltration from these areas. "That is why we have seen more infiltration attempts from Poonch and Rajouri during the past one month," said an army official.
Over ten attempts have been made in which about a dozen militants were killed.
Abu Shafa Shah, divisional commander of LeT, along with six aides was conducting meetings in Poonch district to organise infiltration of militants from Pakistan. Abu Dawood, a commander of JeM, is working as a main strategist for strikes during the electoral process, the official said.
The two have appointed four "receivers" each at traditional infiltration routes in Poonch and Rajouri districts who would work as guides for the infiltrating militants.
"They are also motivating locals for shelter and other logistic help," the official said.
An army official at Northern Command headquarter in Udhampur said: "We are taking these intelligence inputs very seriously and have stepped up vigil all along the 720 km LoC (Line of Control) with Pakistan to prevent any infiltration attempt".
The state has 60,000 policemen and about 40,000 para-military troopers. The administration has requisitioned about 600 more companies of para-military forces for "smooth conduct of elections".
