RAIPUR: The family of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who completes his five-year term in office next month, owns a decent amount of cash, jewellery and property, but surprisingly no vehicle.

In an affidavit submitted to the district election officer along with his nomination papers to contest from Rajnandgaon for the Nov 14 assembly polls, Raman Singh told the officer that neither he nor his wife owns any vehicle.

But Singh, who was a minister of state for commerce and industries in the Vajpayee led-National Democratic Alliance government, has Rs 742,000 in cash while his wife Veena Singh has Rs 437,000.

Besides cash, Singh has Rs 603,247 deposits in various banks and financial institutions and gold assets worth Rs.500,000 and silver assets worth Rs 88,000.

He also has invested Rs 688,392 in a life insurance policy.

The 56-year-old doctor-turned politician also owns one-fourth of a 2,400 sq ft house in Kawardha town, valued Rs.400,000.

He has a high income group (HIG) house at Purena area in the capital Raipur, valued at Rs 1,755,000 (Rs.1.7 million).

Singh's wife has gold assets worth Rs 750,000, silver assets worth Rs 176,000 and diamond jewellery worth Rs 300,000.

She owns land in Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh and in Kawardha district in Chhattisgarh that has combined market value of about Rs 1,420,000 (Rs.1.4 million).

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared that the polls next month will be fought under the leadership of Singh, who was appointed chief minister Dec 7, 2004.

This is the third time in a row that Singh has shifted his constituency. He successfully contested an assembly by-poll from Dongargaon in 2004, while he lost on his home turf Kawardha to the Congress in the 1998 polls.
