ISLAMABAD/ SRINGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik is scheduled to marry a Rawalpindi-based Britain-born Pakistani girl by March, after his release from jail and permission to visit Pakistan to bring his bride home.

The 42-year old JKLF chief is currently lodged in Sumbal police station after his arrest for heading the poll boycott campaign.

“We plan to solemnise the wedding in January or February, but no final date has been fixed. We will move his bail plea soon. If he is not released then we will postpone the wedding,” JKLF general secretary Ghulam Rasool Dar Eidi said. Others said that several Kashmiri leaders, including Farooq Haider and Rafiq Dar, would visit the bride’s family by December to perform the Nikah ceremony.

He got engaged to Mashal Malik, a Pakistani painter, in absentia. The bride-to-be lives in Bahria and has done her PG in political economy from the London School of Economics. She is the daughter of Hussain Malik, a former chairman of the economics department at the Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad.

Malik is the third Kashmiri leader to choose a life partner from outside the state. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is married to an American-born Kashmiri girl and People’s Conference chief Sajjad Gani Lone is married to a Pakistani girl, daughter of Kashmiri leader Amanullah Khan. Both women have been refused visas by the Indian government.

Malik is one of the four JKLF commanders known as HAJY, the group that started the armed struggle in Kashmir. Malik and Javid Mir joined politics after giving up arms in 1994.
