Australia ended the day on 254 for four with Michael Clarke out in the last over of the day and Katich said they have got the upper hand in the contest so far.
"We would look to 400 plus tomorrow and see how we can put pressure on India from there," a visibly happy Katich said on Thursday after the end of the first day's play.
Katich, who contributed 66 and shared a crucial 166-run second-wicket partnership with captain Ricky Ponting, said the pitch was playing well on the first day.
"It was a good wicket so far. But it will keep low and take spin later on. It is dry and there are some cracks, but so far it is okay," he said.
He refused to comment whether the umpire made a correct decision in sending Matthew Hayden back to the pavilion in the first over of the innings.
"There was a bit of swing early on. At the other end I can't really say whether he was out or not," he said.
Katich admitted the conditioning camp in Jaipur and the warm-up game in Hyderabad had helped the team acclimatise to Indian conditions.
"We had some good hits in Hyderabad. Obviously, the camp in Jaipur had been of immense help to us. It has helped us in adapting to the conditions."
Asked what his thoughts were on Phil Jacques, in whose place he was opening the Australian innings, Katich said, "Jacques has not done anything wrong. I did well in the West Indies and I grabbed the opportunity that came my way here."
