Women commandos will soon man Rashtrapati Bhavan

NEW DELHI: The Rashtrapati Bhavan will soon have a team of highly-trained women commandos of the Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP), deployed as part of the security cover, in it, reveal top government sources.

According to sources, the move to form a specialised woman commando unit has been discussed in several home ministry officials’ security review meetings. The task of inducting woman commandos has been entrusted to the ITBP, which is also in-charge of the security of the entire president estate including the president’s house. “These woman commandos will be part of security cover provided by the ITBP to dozens of VVIPs including president, vice-president and several other politicians,” said a senior ITBP officer on condition of anonymity.

The new woman battalion will have over 500 members who will be trained to handle high-speed fire arms and small arms. They will also be trained to use high-tech security devices like those used in the security arrangements of VVIPs.

The officer did not divulge when or how many woman commandos would be inducted into Rashtrapati Bhavan. However, he said, “Once all the women commandos are fully trained, the best ones will be deployed in the president’s house.”

Apart from providing security cover to VVIPs, some women commandos will also be deployed at the border. “There are several areas like the Nathu La Pass on the Indo-China border, which are business points too. There is an urgent need to have woman personnel deployed there. So, this new battalion will be of immense use,” said the officer.

The ITBP is one of the best central paramilitary forces. It is in-charge securing the Indo-China border. “ITBP is deployed on border guarding duty from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Diphu La in Arunachal Pradesh. They man 3,488 km of the Indo-China border,” said the officer.

ITBP commandos also provide security cover to VVIPs like, Ashok Singhal, the International president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad,  Ghulam Nabi Azad, the former the parliamentary affairs minister and Mehbooba Mufti, the president of J&K’s  Peoples Democratic Party among others.
