UDALGURI (Assam): The toll in clashes between Bodos and illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam rose to 12 on Saturday. Eight burnt corpses were found in Udalguri district while two persons were shot dead by police when they were trying to set houses on fire.

George Basumatary, deputy commissioner of Udalguri district, was transferred while superintendent of police Anup Kumar Singh was suspended for failing to control the situation. The eight burnt corpses were found in the Bodo villages of Sonaripara and Jhargaon under Udalguri police station. The villages were attacked by illegal migrants with bows and arrows in the wee hours. The attackers set houses ablaze in the two villages and a neighbouring hamlet. But two others trying to set fire to Bodo houses at Bhakatpara were shot dead by the police.

On Friday, two corpses were found in a village under Rowta police station as arson and looting in neighbouring Darrang district forced the administration to impose curfew in Dalgaon and Dhola. On Saturday, curfew was imposed in Udalguri too.

Over 25 people with severe burns were shifted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital while others were admitted to local hospitals. At least 50 people have been injured in the violence, which began on Thursday when some migrants tried to steal cattle from Bodo-dominated Mohanpur village of Udalguri district.

Meanwhile, reporters saw Pakistani flags in Sonaripara and Mohanpur and took photographs. But state government officials and the security forces denied any knowledge of the flags.

Nearly 1,000 soldiers have been deployed to assist the district administration and additional security forces were rushed to Udalguri. Shoot-at-sight orders were issued
and troops staged a flag march in various areas of the district.
