ALLAHABAD: The life of Mahatma Gandhi has been depicted in stamps brought out by 150 countries, including the Great Britain, the country he fought against for our Independence. Interestingly, Gandhi happens to be the first person outside the British Royal family to be depicted on British stamps.

A pulse trader from Allahabad has collected around 800 stamps from all over the world. Anil Rastogi’s collection boasts of stamps from 150 countries.

The 50-year-old trader who began collecting from the age of 15, possesses other memorabilia like first-day covers, logos, tokens, coins, postcards, labels, playing cards and mobile cards issued by various countries in memory of the Mahatma.

Rastogi’s ‘treasure’ also contains Bhutanese plastic stamps, ‘Leader of twelfth century’ stamps by the Federation of Micronasia and Dominican stamps celebrating 40 years of Human Rights where Gandhi is shown along with Martin Luthur King, Albert Einstein and Roosevelt.

The set of 10 stamps issued by South America includes Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel too. A Turkmenistan stamp features Gandhi and Indira together, commemorating 50 years of Indian Independence.

Further, Rastogi owns a stamp issued by North America that features Gandhi on his deathbed. A 3D stamp shows Bapu with children. Then there are Nigeria’s Gandhi Einstein stamps, stamps from Tajikistan depicting Gandhi riding a bicycle and ‘Student in London’ set of stamps from Gambia.

With such a treasure trove of stamps in his possession, Rastogi is currently compiling an album that would depict the entire life of Mahatma Gandhi in both Hindi and English. “I want to use this treasure to reach out to people and make them aware of his life and achievements,” Rastogi said.
