KOLKATA: The Rizwanur Rahman case took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when the CBI revealed the contents of his last suicide note in a lower court here.
As per the note recovered from Rizwanur’s computer, the Kolkata graphics designer accuses, besides those already named, his uncle Shahidur Rahman and heavyweight Trinamool MLA Zabed Khan of abetting his suicide.
In all, the note mentions eight people – Rizwanur’s father-in-law and industrialist Ashok Todi, his family associate Anil Saraogi, former deputy commissioner (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh, former deputy commissioner (detective department) Ajay Kumar, assistant commissioner (anti-rowdy squad) Sukanti Chakrabarty, sub-inspector (ARS) Krishnendu Das, Zabed Khan and Shahidur Rahman.
Zabed’s alleged role in the suicide has caused immense embarrassment to the Trinamool Congress, especially since party leader Kalyan Bandopadhyay is the Rahman family’s counsel in the case.
Meanwhile, another local court granted interim bail to Ajay Kumar, Sukanti Chakrabarty and Krishnendu Das, who spend Tuesday night behind bars after the court of the chief metropolitan magistrate rejected their earlier bail plea. Kumar is the first IPS officer in West Bengal to have been put behind bars.
The Rahmans’ counsel Bandopadhyay strongly opposed the bail, saying the accused could misuse their power to destroy evidence and influence witnesses. He also appealed for inclusion of Gyanwant Singh’s name in the charge sheet since it finds mention in the suicide note of Rizwanur. However, the CBI counsel said the agency had recommended only a departmental inquiry against him.
